weddings, white trash, and other goings on

Harvey and Ian playing chess
went to florida memorial day weekend to see paul (one of harvey's long time friends).  this was generally a nice time.  his wife heather was totally awesome, and h wound up spending quite a bit of time playing chess with their eldest child, ian.  also went to the beach (naturally) and had just a lovely time in the water.  no sunburns, and even saw a group of manta rays swimming very unusually close to the shore.  hoping to get back to the water soon.

Harv and Paul

no sooner than we got back from our trip, it seemed eminent that terri and chad would be getting hitched momentarily.  lots to do for that.  emergency dress alteration, pick up tux, blah, blah, blah.  and so it was that they were married on June 4, 2011.  terri, chad, and their company of particularly attractive bridesmaids and men in ridiculous penguin suits stood before a church sanctuary full of onlookers for a moderately brief ceremony before heading to the reception at laurel train depot.  i do not recall many details of this ceremony (because all wedding vows usually sound the same to me, and because i have a tendency to tune out baptist preachers).  i do however, know that chad sang terri a little wedding song he wrote.  also, something uttered by aforementioned baptist preacher about a wife's submissiveness that kind of pissed in my cornflakes.  oh well.  all in all, it was sweet, i guess.  terri and chad getting married, i mean.  terri looked great, and they love each other.  really, that's all you need for a nice wedding, huh?  i mean, the bride has to look good, and the people getting married need to be doing so for the right reasons.  everything else is just fluff.  so, we went to the train depot, where harv and vetter immediately began setting up the open bar (i.e. a cooler in the bed of h's truck.)  drinking, eating, photobooth was cute, slideshow, boys played a little set even though h had a totally gross finger he smushed in the vault at work.  everything good.  the newlyweds are in the bahamas now, where i hope it is not as HOT and GROSS as it is here.  if it is, i hope they stay in the water.

Harvey's Totally Gross Finger

now, i must talk about my rapidly growing collection of all things tacky and/or trashy.  these things are indescribably delightful to me.  they embody the spirit of happiness, of being totally without care.  "hakuna matata," if you will.  it all began with the bottle tree that i got in exchange for a decrease in my crankiness level at the okatoma festival.  unfortunately, i came home from terri's bachelorette party to find that harvey and morrison had partially decorated my wonderful little tree with pbr cans and high-life bottles.  i am slowly getting around to taking them down and replacing them as i obtain prettier bottles.  since i got the bottle tree, i have purchased two wind chimes and two little frogs.  one of my frogs is a ceramic fellar with particular emotive and endearing eyes.  the other is a metal fisherman with a small planter attached to the platform on which he stands.  yesterday, i made a huge leap for all white trash when austin and i set up a three foot deep above-ground pool in the back yard.  harvey has surrounded it with tiki torches, added a lawn chair, and placed my frogs within view of the pool.  i have floaty rings and and plastic ball with LED's in it that makes a "light show" in the water at night.  everything is unimaginably wonderful.  couldn't be happier.
